Description
Mazie's Mission is a very unique non-profit veterinary hospital serving an underserved population- homeless animals. We are looking for a compassionate veterinarian to join our team. We function as a private practice (full bloodwork capabilities, dental cleanings/extractions, ultrasound capabilities, digital radiographs, extensive surgery including orthopedics) but have a different demographic. Our clients are other non-profits who have the funds to allow our staff to treat as we wish, helping and curing animals that need us the most. Some of our clients have been with us for 12 years and trust us explicitly. Euthanasia is rarely on the table, only when medically or behaviorally necessary. We also have our own rescue program where we pull medically needy animals from surrounding shelters and place them in foster homes.
Our founder (and main veterinarian/executive director) is looking at retirement and wants to find a veterinarian with the same level of compassion to eventually become the new executive director/veterinary lead. Mentorship is available for as long as needed. Extensive surgery skills (or the desire to obtain them) is a must, as we are very heavy with amputations, mass removals, cherry eyes, entropions, spay/neuter, enucleations, orthopedics, you name it. We do work with Lone Star Surgery for orthopedics and any other soft tissue procedure that is out of our wheelhouse. Referral to specialists is always an option, but we try to do most procedures in house.
Salary during mentorship is as published ($130,000 to $145,000 DOE) but can and should be much higher once the current executive director steps down. It can be over $200,000 depending on how the new leadership manages the hospital. The current veterinarian is planning on mentoring the new veterinarian for at least 18 months (longer if needed), then dropping to part-time in hospital (2 days) and off-site fundraising. The hospital is busy enough to need 2 veterinarians but has the potential to greatly expand under new leadership. Fundraising will be concentrated on building a new free-standing 13,000sf hospital with physical therapy and training abilities. We currently have a $1.3M budget with very minimal fundraising.
This is an excellent and unique way to have the ability to run a hospital without the extreme stress of private practice or worry of selling in the future. There is a 4-day work week with no weekends or holidays. Health/dental/vision insurance offered along with vacation, holiday pay, dues payment. You also get extremely discounted veterinary care for all your animals. We have an excellent staff, most have been here for years, who are also great mentors.
It is very important to the founder that the organization is left to another veterinarian and not a lay person. There is a board of directors, but they are very hands-off and are there for mostly financial guidance. We don't want our important work to be managed by anyone other than a veterinarian who understands the balance of running a business while being a tremendous resource for the homeless animals in our area.
We are open to part-time in the beginning but will require full-time by next year.
